There are books which we forget the moment we read them. There are books which stay fresh in us even after years of reading. There are books which prick your heart from within, even as you are reading them. The White Tiger, by Arvind Adiga, this year's winner of the prestigious Man Booker award belongs to the third divide.

The novel is darkly humorous, witty and paints a brooding picture of our country that will stay with you even after you finish the novel. The story told through the eyes of Balram Halwai, a sweet maker by birth, depicts his rise from the status of a lowly servant to an entrepreneur, the White Tiger. The story winds through the sewage of the village of laxmangarh to the mining town of Dhanbad, and to the smog of Delhi and its dark slums and swanky malls. Throughout the novel Balram refers to his birthplace as the Darkness and you know why as you learn of his plight.

The book that talks about feudal lords who exploit the village, the power crazed politicians who care for nothing but themselves, and family ties that choke out the life may seem to be hugely pessimistic and cynical (and remind of tamil masala movies of 80's) , but the naked truth slaps right across your face. You cannot ignore the truth that Balrams do exist and the raw irony of it.

Arvind Adiga takes the Indian knight out of his shining armour and reveals the ugly, raw sores going deeper. More than anything, its the growing sense of apathy that the novel depicts is what keeps pricking at our insides, after finishing the novel. This is a book, that makes you want to hate it, for the ominous truth that it so shockingly conveys.

How true!! the book is an example of what a man's imagination can achieve. It can create entire races, their mythology, language, customs, traditions, passions, fears... thus J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings became a creative equivalent of an entire civilisation. It is the book that transcended several genres.

Difficult to classify it into a genre, it is at once a great fantasy, a drama, a heroic romance and a novel of gigantic proportions. To use a single, but often cliched word, An Epic.
The novel begins in the village of shire, in middle earth, where a hobbit Frodo is entrusted with a golden ring by his uncle. The ring is more than what it seems to be and soon Frodo embarks on a perilous but great adventure to destroy the ring; for it is the one ruling ring made by the evil lord Sauron with which he could bring the entire world under his dominion.

The story might now seem ordinary, what with all the 'saving the world' drama that Hollywood throws at us. But read the book to be transported into a world filled with surprises and an adventure that you will never wish to end. Tolkien weaves a magical net around us with exquisite details of the world that Frodo and his friends are in. Be it the beautiful shire, or the rich Rivendell, or the dangerous mines of Moria, or the grandeur of Gondor or the bleakness of foul Mordor, Tolkien conjures them all as vividly as if we were travelling with Frodo. His genius for capturing the beauty of his fictional world keeps us enthralled.

The book was released in three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King which some people erroneously consider to be a trilogy. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), the 100 per cent two-wheeler subsidiary of Japan’s Honda Motor Company, on Monday launched its new bike ‘CBF Stunner’. Targeted at youth, the new 125cc motorcycle, with 11 bhp engine and five-speed transmission that comes in three variants, has been priced between Rs. 47,070 and Rs. 51,655. The new bike promises to provide its customers an ultimate experience of a true Honda bike. The new bike is a reflection of Honda’s worldwide sports bikes. In India, we will continue to bring exciting products and be a full line company by 2010 starting with 100cc motorcycles and fun bikes.” The bike would be available across the country from the third week of July. According to HMSI Sales and Marketing Head, the company plans to sell 10 lakh units — seven-lakh scooters and three lakh bikes — in the current fiscal and the launch of the new bike will help them achieve the target. “We plan to sell 80,000 units of CBF Stunner in the current financial year. Indicating that HMSI would launch two new models this year, Mr. Rattan said: “We hope to introduce our 800cc category superbike next year that will be priced above Rs. 10 lakh. The sales of 125cc+ motorcycles grown by almost 15% over the period of April 2007-January 2008. Lot of action has been seen in recent past in the 125cc segment as the consumer focus is gradually shifting towards 125cc+ segment from the dominating 100cc segment.
According to Economic times, the Japanese two-wheeler giant is currently testing out a new motorcycle at its factory in Maneswar, Gurgaon. Codenamed KWFA and christened the CBF Stunner, the new bike is most likely to be launched by August 2008 and is expected to be priced at around Rs 52,000 ex-showroom. With a 125 cc mill, its expected to pump 11 bhp and looks like a ‘baby Karizma’

With a strategic move by Honda (HMSI) to augment the 12% market share it holds in this segment, the company is like to introduce an all new motorcycle in125cc segment in addition of its existing 125cc Shine. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on the lines of football’s English Premier League and the National Basketball League (NBA) of the U.S It has been launched just to supress the ICL which made news some months back.

The study, by researchers at Drexel and Northwestern universities, sets at rest debate on the subject creative problem-solvers have a distinct pattern of brain activity — even at rest — compared to CONVENTIONAL PROBLEM SOLVERS. Details of the study has been published in the journal Neuropsychologia.

As part of the study, participants first had their electroencephalograms (EEGs), which depict brain activity, recorded. They were made to solve a series of anagrams (scrambled letters that can be rearranged to form words). Anagrams can be solved by methodically trying out different letter combinations, or they can be solved with a sudden insight — an "Aha!" moment.

The participants were then divided into two groups — those who reported solving the problems by sudden insight, and those who reported solving problems methodically. Resting-state brain activity for these groups was later compared. The two groups displayed strikingly different patterns of brain activity during the resting period at the beginning of the experiment.

Creative solvers exhibited greater activity in several regions of the right hemisphere — the region where "remote" associations between elements of a problem are processed. Greater right-hemisphere activity even during a "resting" state suggests that even the spontaneous thought of creative individuals contains more remote associations.

Creative and methodical solvers also exhibited different activity in areas of the brain that process visual information. The pattern of "alpha" and "beta" brainwaves in creative solvers was consistent with diffuse rather than focussed visual attention. Thus random experiences may trigger remote associations to produce an "Aha!" moment in creative people.

The French today unveiled the world's fastest train title by accelerating a modified TGV to a white-knuckle 574.8km/h (356mph)

The previous record of 515km/h (320mph) was set in 1990, although a Japanese Maglev managed to reach a cool 581km/h (361mph) back in 2003.

The high-speed dash was made on a section of track between Paris and Strasbourg. The "V150" vehicle boasted "larger wheels than usual and the engine [pulled] three double-decker cars",and had already hit 559km/h in "unofficial trials", according to state rail outfit SNCF.President Nicolas Sarkozy helped to introduce the fastest train AGV, which stands for Automotrice Grande Vitesse, or High-Speed Railcar -- a bullet-train with a cruise speed of up to 360 kilometres per hour (210 mph).
Lighter than the TGV, it is also designed to be 98-percent recyclable.
SNCF and the train's manufacturer Alstom claim the record attempt represented "a test on the infrastructure in extreme conditions, which is impossible to carry out in the laboratory", although we suspect national pride may have played a part in it.

The AGV's innovative design is the motors fitted under each passenger carriage which constructors say slashes energy consumption by 15 percent and cuts maintenance costs.
